VSU Entrepreneurship Center Fosters Minority Entrepreneurship

The Virginia State University (VSU) Entrepreneurship Center’s innovative multisector partnerships integrate the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Collaborations with organizations like the Metropolitan Business League and the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity enable underrepresented entrepreneurs to access financial training, seed funding, and business certification. Spanning government, industry, and academia, this comprehensive support ecosystem makes the initiative a holistic solution to regional economic disparities. A further innovative element of the program is its flexibility in tailoring resources to entrepreneurs’ needs.

Call to Action

Entrepreneurship among Black residents in the Richmond area is notably low, with only 2.8 percent of Black residents participating in entrepreneurship compared to 5.4 percent of White residents. This disparity reflects barriers that prevent underrepresented groups from accessing resources such as funding, training, and mentorship.

As part of an HBCU with a mission of elevating minority communities, VSU’s Entrepreneurship Center responded by launching the Minority Small Business Launch Center in 2021. It was funded by a 453,000 USD grant from Virginia’s Office of the Governor and an additional 238,000 USD in services from various sponsors.

The Entrepreneurship Center focuses on addressing barriers to entrepreneurship through tailored support, including business planning, state contracting certification, and mentorship. The center also connects entrepreneurs with financial and technical resources via partnerships with local governments, regional business entities, and chambers of commerce. Its mission aligns with the economic growth of businesses owned by people from underrepresented groups in Central Virginia.

Since its inception, the Entrepreneurship Center has made significant strides by training over 1,000 entrepreneurs, facilitating the creation of more than 300 businesses, and generating over 150 new jobs. The center is a catalyst for entrepreneurial success and economic growth in underserved communities.

Innovation Description

The VSU Entrepreneurship Center, through the Minority Small Business Launch Center, offers a variety of resources and support services tailored to underrepresented entrepreneurs, veterans, and students in the Central Virginia region. These services include training programs on business planning, state contracting, and securing VC, as well as hands-on support through co-working spaces and access to technology for prototype development.

In partnership with Startup Virginia, the center offers a Business Launchpad Certificate program, which equips entrepreneurs with essential skills for business success. The Entrepreneurship Center plays a vital role in student engagement by hosting regular business bazaars, pitch competitions, and international study tours that expose students to underrepresented entrepreneurship models globally.

The Entrepreneurship Center’s extensive partnerships with local governments, chambers of commerce, and regional business networks provide entrepreneurs with a variety of resources to support business growth and sustainability. These collaborations enable it to offer customized services based on the specific needs of the community. By combining academic expertise with practical business support, the Entrepreneurship Center has established itself as a hub for entrepreneurial innovation in the region and significantly impacted local economic development.

In the last three years, the Entrepreneurship Center has made significant contributions to economic development in Central Virginia. The Minority Small Business Launch Center program alone has trained over 1,200 entrepreneurs, facilitated the launch of 300 new businesses, and helped enhance nearly 1,000 existing businesses. These achievements have directly led to the creation of over 150 jobs and the awarding of more than 400 business certifications and credentials.

The Entrepreneurship Center’s impact extends beyond immediate economic gains. By fostering a culture of entrepreneurship among underrepresented and underserved populations, the center has contributed to long-term community empowerment and resilience. Programs like it provide students with real-world experience, while partnerships with organizations like the Metropolitan Business League and Lighthouse Labs offer entrepreneurs opportunities for mentorship, funding, and technical assistance.

The Entrepreneurship Center has also received significant recognition for its efforts, including a Peoples’ Choice Triple E International Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship and a Richmond Community Transformer Award to the center director for the center’s financial contributions to the area. These accolades reflect VSUEC’s role as a key driver of entrepreneurial growth and economic inclusion, which have positioned it as a model for similar initiatives nationwide.
