The Mission of the School is “We foster captains of industry
who create value for business and serve communities in
Asia.
It has three pillars: Leadership, Innovation, and Integrity. (1)
To “foster captains of industry,” we pass on Leadership skills
to foster leaders with insightful knowledge and effective
communication skills. (2) To “create value for business,” we
employ Innovation to develop professionals with creativity
and advanced professional skills. (3) To “serve
communities,” we rely on Integrity to foster communityminded
citizens who think beyond themselves and apply
global perspectives. This leadership philosophy is based on
Thomas Carlyle’s term “captains of industry,” and the
Innovation and Integrity aspects reflect the Abacus and
Analects, respectively, which Eiichi Shibusawa emphasized
in his book.
Hitotsubashi SBA has a unique educational model based on
a seminar-centered learning platform. The School places a
high priority on small-class seminar education to enhance
student-student and student-faculty interaction and
education across the degree programs. In keeping with this
educational ethos, we employ only traditional face-to-face
classroom models to motivate our students to engage in
learning. Seminar education enables students to become
involved in active learning; an approach that has resulted in
recognition from outside the School.
Students can enjoy such a unique educational environment
at all following programs offered. (1) Bachelor of Science in
Commerce and Management (established in AY1949), (2)
Master of Science in Commerce and Management
(established in AY1953), (3) PhD in Commerce and
Management (established in AY1953), (4) Master of Business
Administration (established in AY2000), (5) PhD in Finance
(consolidated in AY2018), and (6) PhD in Business
Administration (established in AY2019).
