Summary of Leader’s Initiative
Ajay Vinzé, dean of Costello College of Business and interim provost for 2026 at George Mason University, recognized that students desired flexible degree options, which he termed the “Spotify-ization” of education. He led the design and implementation of Costello’s innovative modular MS in Management degree in collaboration with the business community. It incorporates a business core with multidisciplinary certificates from across the university.
Leader’s Motive for Initiative
Rapid technological, demographic, and global shifts since the COVID-19 pandemic have fundamentally changed the way students consume information and knowledge, as well as their expectations of a business school. At the same time, employers have come to expect immediate career readiness from business school graduates. With this understanding, Vinzé identified the need to push the boundaries of what a business school should be in order to redefine how business education is delivered. Vinzé looked at the future of business and the need for flexibility to meet student, business, government, and community needs.
Drawing a parallel to the unbundling of music from albums to individual songs, Vinzé recognized that a similar process is at work in higher education. The rising popularity of alternative credentials, fueled by developments in online learning technologies, heralds a future where higher education is no longer synonymous with a singular pathway that leads a student toward an advanced degree.
Rather, he recognized a larger trend toward the modularization, or unbundling, of higher education. Within this model, students might choose to earn technical certifications, complete skills-based short courses such as coding boot camps, or take MOOCs (massive open online courses) instead of enrolling in traditional degree programs.
With a mindset that “everything is business” and a clear understanding of the importance that we are all in the business of something, Vinzé catalyzed this strategic vision for a future of higher education in which multidisciplinary stackable certificates would lead to a customized degree in business. The modular approach allows students to chart their own courses and timelines, combining disciplines that complement business and provide the skills they need to lead and thrive in the rapidly changing future of work.
This innovative curriculum model, providing relevant, contextual business skills, moves students toward longer-term and more rewarding relationships with their current and future employers.
Leader’s Contribution to Initiative
When Vinzé joined Costello in 2022, he spearheaded the initiative to introduce stackable certificates that would lead to a formal degree. The idea was both inspirational and transformational, as it reimagined graduate business education in a way that allowed it to meet current and future student and business needs.
The MS in Management program was redesigned in 2022–23 and launched in fall 2024. The dean ensured that the college was agile in developing suggestions to realize the program. He discussed the redesign with advisory boards and the broader business community to gather feedback and ensure its success. While the team was critical in managing the details and working across the university to ensure that the program met university requirements, Vinzé was essential in championing the idea to the deans of other colleges and schools, along with the provost, to gain their buy-in and participation in offering multidisciplinary certificate options for the program.
A unique feature of the initiative’s development was Vinzé’s and the team’s ability to minimize the siloed university education approach and build in a multidisciplinary approach to serve student needs. Along the way, he ensured the team was encouraged, recognized, and supported.
Vinzé also promoted the program with the Commonwealth of Virginia government, particularly with the secretary of education, the secretary of labor, and state senators and delegates, detailing how the stackable, modular approach could assist with workforce development.
He continues to promote the program to CEOs, business partners, and business groups, identifying it as an option for their employees, either as a group or individually. For example, he has shared the program in forums like chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, a regional economic group (the 123 Club), the Northern Virginia Technology Council, and the U.S. Department of the Navy. He explains how the program fits with the way students want to consume learning, in smaller bites, and how stackable certificates can provide companies with employees who have business skills and contextual knowledge of their business with the appropriate certificates in place.
Vinzé also promoted this curricular innovation through a co-authored AACSB Insights article, “Responding to the ‘Spotify-ization’ of Education.”
Impact of Leader’s Initiative
The modular education initiative has been a key pillar in the Costello College of Business strategic plan, and it has reinvigorated the MS in Management program. It expanded the pool of potential applicants by changing the program’s focus and work requirements. In the face of alternative credentials, the flexible degree program has increased student enrollment, making the “business of everything” a reality for the college.
By partnering with all academic units at the university, the MS in Management offers students across the university a way to obtain a master’s degree in business combined with their area of interest, offering both flexibility and a multidisciplinary program.
With the new curriculum, which began in fall 2024, students take a set of core business courses and then complete a graduate certificate (12–15 credits) in an area of their choosing. Students can also begin with a certificate and then add the degree program, further providing flexibility with stackable certificates.
Certificates are offered both within Costello and across George Mason University, including options in business analytics, conflict analysis and resolution, environmental and sustainability management, government contract management, human capital and HR management, information security management, marketing, nonprofit management, public management, responsible AI, and sports management.
The updated curriculum drew nearly 60 newly enrolled students in fall 2024, up from 34 students in fall 2023. Total enrollment in fall 2025 grew again, to 119.
Interest from the community, the region, and Costello’s business stakeholders has been high. The program offers a stackable degree for workforce development and retraining. Businesses and other organizations have expressed interest in sending their workforce to such a program. For example, Fairfax City Economic Development, a Costello Corporate and Community Partner, has been in discussions with the graduate programs team about the MS in Management program as a professional development opportunity for city employees. The Air Force Central Command has sent a student to the program as part of its relationship with the university and college.
The new student profiles also show improvements in mean and median GPA, and employer-funded students have increased from 6 percent to 31 percent, demonstrating the value employers have identified. Overall, the new program allows students to create a customized degree that combines skills in business and other disciplines to explore career options and meet future workforce needs.
In recognition of innovative practices and his global presence, Vinzé has recently been tapped by the George Mason University president, Gregory Washington, to lead a task force that is conceptualizing the possibilities and building a roadmap for the George Mason Pan-Asia strategy. Vinzé has lived and worked and has professional presence in over 75 countries, making him ideally suited for this role.
