Developing New Degree Programs to Serve Society

Jikyeong Kang, president, CEO, dean, and MVP professor of marketing at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and member of AACSB's board of directors, and AACSB's EVP and chief innovation and strategy officer, Dan LeClair, talk about the need to develop new degree programs that will move society forward.

Dan LeClair: [00:00] I know you're developing new degree programs. I wonder if you could tell us about some of those programs and how you see them fitting.

Jikyeong Kang: [00:22] Our MBA program will always be our flagship program. We will continue to innovate, nurture, and do everything we can do to make sure that stays as our flagship program. We just established a new school.

[00:39] AIM has three schools: Graduate School of Business which offers MBA programs, we have our development management program which offers development degrees, and we have our executive education.

[00:53] In addition to three currently existing schools, the board, in March, approved a new school. It's going to be called a School of Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship.

[01:04] This is really to practice what we so strongly believe in right now, and that is the way we can help the reason in the country, is not only to produce business leaders and managers who work in a corporate environment, or even development management organizations, but also to nurture students the spirit of innovation, spirit of entrepreneurship. Also, to let them know how the business and technology can intersect.

[01:37] Next year, we are going to start a data science program. Some may actually say, "Why is the Asian Institute of Management getting into data science rather than, for example, business analytics?" which is a bit softer side of the data.

[01:54] We believe the best way that any data scientist could provide the value and make a contribution is only if they know how to make the connection between the business and management world and the technology and the science world.

[02:15] I think we are in a best position to be able to generate tomorrow's leaders in those sectors where they're not just learning technical knowledge, but also picking up the business and management side of it.
