Curriculum Development for Design Thinking for Creativity and Innovation: Singapore

26 April 2013 | Singapore

When IBM interviewed over 1,500 CEOs last year, creativity was identified most frequently as the leadership quality required for the next five years. When they interviewed executives and business school deans, Datar, Garvin, and Cullen found that a common criticism of MBA programs is that graduates "learn analysis, but not action." Design, based in a studio approach to education, is one way business schools can address these issues. A design studio blends analysis, engages students in practice, and draws on the many skills they develop during an MBA program. Through a series of thought-provoking exercise, this seminar was created to demonstrate the power of design in solving today's complex management problems.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will learn how to teach design in the context of business issues where organizations need to respond in creative, innovative or transformational ways. In particular they will:

  • Learn how a design attitude complements the decision attitude that dominates management education and practice
  • Use design inquiry to frame and reframe problems so that their solutions will address what is really going on with customers (internal or external)
  • Apply multiple methods to generate, prototype and assess alternative candidate solutions to the problems they have identified
  • Get direction in helping students to navigate the cultural, strategic, and organizational issues that attend applying design ideas in contexts where these are likely to be unfamiliar

Facilitators

Youngjin Yoo, director of Center for Design and Innovation, professor in management information systems and strategy, and Irwin L. Gross Research Fellow, Fox School of Business and Management, Temple University
