Virtual Campuses
The popular Linden Labs multi-user virtual environment called
Second Life (SL) is used by several educational institutions, including business schools. The ability to interact with three-dimensional, virtual representations (or avatars),
of professors and fellow classmates means that students of participating business schools are able to avoid the often-criticized facet of distance learning—the lack of personal interaction.
SL has attracted so many higher-education institutions to its virtual environment that its open source e-learning platform provider Moodle has collaborated with it to create Sloodle; an open source e-learning platform provider designed specifically for use within the SL metaverse.
AACSB member business schools that are using SL include the following:
INSEAD
INSEAD launched its third campus in Second Life in 2006, and has offerings for MBA, EMBA, and executive education students available there.
University of St. Andrews, School of Management
Minerva Island is the SL area of the University of St. Andrews’ management school.
University of Western Australia
UWA in Second Life helps the university collaborate with business students and
schools worldwide.
