Technology and Multimedia Integration

The definition of a “smart” classroom, or technology-rich learning space, can vary widely between institutions. Virtually all of these types of classrooms include some sort of projector and a central computer to control the audio/visual elements, classroom lights, and screens. In some cases, computers may not be in the classrooms; however, students and faculty may bring their own. In other situations, each student may be equipped with a personal workstation its own built-in computer, while professors work on electronic whiteboards with interactive capabilities. In the most sophisticated environments, students are able to submit questions directly to their professor and interact with their classmates.

Examples of technology used in business school classrooms are provided below:

  • Audience response technologies
  • Smartphones and other hand-held data devices
  • Class-capture or lecture-capture capabilities (video, image, and/or audio recording)
  • Document camera
  • Interactive white boards
  • LCD/HD projectors (mobile, podium, or ceiling-mounted)
  • Electronic amplification for lecturer (podium or wireless handheld)
  • Electronic amplification at student desks
  • Wireless or blue-tooth (providing Internet and computer-to-computer access)
  • Networked computers at student desks
  • Projection screens (one or more, automatic, with remote controls)
  • Simultaneous translation capabilities
  • Sound system (speakers, sound control)
  • Television (may have access to local and/or international programming)
  • Touch pad operation of lighting, window/screen drapes, or equipment
  • Traditional transparency projector
  • Disc players
  • Videoconference capabilities (in classrooms, auditoriums, career services centers)
  • Wireless remotes (for audio/visual controls)
