Non-Governmental Organizations, Nonprofits, and Other Initiatives

A collaborative effort of WBSCSB, PRME, and GRLI that seeks to learn of new ways and opportunities for management education to reinvent itself to play a positive role in society today and in the future.


American Indian Business Leaders (AIBL)
AIBL is the only American Indian nonprofit organization solely dedicated to empowering business students in the United States. AIBL operates its national headquarters on the University of Montana campus at the School of Business Administration in Missoula, Montana.


Association for the Advancement of Sustainable Higher Education (AASHE)
An association of colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada with a mission to promote sustainability in all sectors of higher education through education, communication, research, and professional development. AASHE developed the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS), a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance.


ASHOKA
Since 1981, the organization has elected over 2,000 leading social entrepreneurs as Ashoka Fellows, providing them with living stipends, professional support, and access to a global network of peers.


Business and Human Rights Resource Centre
A resource center with news on companies’ human rights impacts worldwide and links to materials published by a wide variety of organizations.


Business Council for Peace (Bpeace)
The council focuses on the entrepreneurial advancement of women in regions where conflict is, or was, present.


Business Leaders Initiative on Human Rights (BLIHR)
The principle purpose of the BLIHR was to find “practical ways of applying the aspirations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights within a business context and to inspire other businesses to do likewise.” This site is the ‘legacy website’ for the six years of work that took place between March 2003 and March 2009.


Canadian Business Ethics Research Network (CBERN) 
The Canadian Business Ethics Research Network aims to promote knowledge-sharing and partnerships within the field of business ethics and across private, governmental, voluntary and academic sectors. CBERN also aims to support work from inception to dissemination, from graduate student research and fellowship opportunities to promoting the projects of established professionals.


Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
An independent nonprofit organization holding a large database of primary corporate-climate change information in the world. Thousands of organizations from across the world’s major economies measure and disclose their greenhouse gas emissions and climate change strategies through CDP.


Center for Global Development
An independent, nonprofit policy research organization dedicated to reducing global poverty and inequality. Through a combination of research and strategic outreach, the center actively engages policymakers and the public to influence the policies of countries' institutions to improve the economic and social development prospects in developing areas.


CDC Development Solutions
Formerly known as Citizens Development Corps, CDC Development Solutions now incorporates that organization as an operating division, along with MBA Enterprise Corps, Citizens Democracy Corps, and Tourism Development Corps.


The Commons: Open Society Sustainability Initiative
The Commons has two principal functions: to serve as an efficient gateway to the focused programs that make it up; and to supply an independent, free forum for world news regarding the issues of sustainable development and social justice.


European Academy for Business in Society (EABIS)
A unique alliance of companies, business schools, and academic institutions that are committed to integrating business in society issues into management theory and practice.


Greenopolis Foundation
Offers grants for U.S. students, educators, and community groups to use toward projects that promote environmental and social sustainability.


Global Entrepreneurship Monitor
A nonprofit research consortium that has a goal of making high-quality international research data on entrepreneurial activity readily available to the public.


Global Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI)
Developed by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and supported by the United Nations Global Compact, the initiative’s goal is to illustrate the necessity of global responsible leadership and encourage its practice in organizations worldwide.


Global Text Project
A joint project of the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia and The Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver, with plans to create a free library of 1,000 electronic texts for students in developing worlds.


Initiative for Global Development (IGD)
An alliance between U.S. business leaders that champion effective solutions to global poverty.


Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB)
A UK-based global center of expertise on the relationship between business and internationally proclaimed human rights standards. IHRB provides impartial space for dialogue and analysis to deepen the understanding of human rights challenges and issues and the appropriate role of business.


International Association of Business and Society (IABS)
A society devoted to researching and teaching the relationships between business, government, and society. IABS is a multidisciplinary association which attracts scholars and executives from all the disciplines of management.


International Business Ethics Institute
A private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational organization founded in response to the growing need for trans-nationalism in the field of business ethics. The Institute promotes business ethics and corporate responsibility and is dedicated to disseminating business ethics information to demonstrate the positive, tangible changes that responsible business can generate.


International Institute For Peace Through Tourism (IIPT)
A nonprofit institution dedicated to fostering and facilitating tourism initiatives which contribute to international understanding and cooperation, provide an improved quality of environment, preserve heritage, and help to bring about a peaceful and sustainable world.


International Sustainable Campus Network 
A network made up of over 25 universities from around the world, aiming to enhance their commitments to construct, redesign, and organize their campuses in an exemplary and sustainable way, and to include the experiences in their research and education mission.


NASBA Center for the Public Trust
A nonprofit organization that provides a platform for corporate America and the accounting profession to explore, promote, and advance ethical practices in organizations. The CPT also acts as a mechanism to link the theoretical aspect of ethics to the practical aspect in professional activities.


Net Impact
An international nonprofit organization with a mission to inspire, educate, and equip individuals to use the power of business to create a more socially and environmentally sustainable world. Business as Unusual: the Net Impact Student Guide to Graduate Business Programs is a free annual guidebook for prospective business students and a “tool for business schools to compare themselves against their peers and develop more robust social impact curricula, career services, and support for student activities.”


PeacethroughCommerce.com
An integrated outreach, education, and engagement program which illuminates the contribution that commerce, trade, and economic development make toward building sustainable peace.


Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI)
Aims to help investors integrate the consideration of environmental, social, and governance issues into investment decision-making and ownership practices, and thereby improve long-term returns to beneficiaries.


Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME)
A set of six principles intended to serve as a framework for institutions to integrate corporate responsibility and sustainability in a gradual, but systemic manner. The initiative is co-convened by AACSB International with the UN Global Compact, EFMD, and several other organizations. Individuals at AACSB member schools are eligible to join the PRME Affinity Group.


Taproot Foundation
The foundation works to transform the field of pro-bono service into a national platform in the U.S., to leverage top talent in support of communities’ greatest needs.


The Oath Project
An independent nonprofit organization founded in 2009, that serves as a platform that supports and enhances the work of those individuals and organizations that have committed themselves to social responsibility in their business practices. A number of business school leaders and members of organizations, such as PRME, the Aspen Institute, and Net Impact, make up the organization’s board of directors and Global Advisory Council.


United Nations Global Compact
A strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. The Global Compact has been instrumental in the development of the Global Responsible Leadership Initiative, the Principles for Responsible Management Education, and the Principles for Responsible Investment.


U.S. Government Accountability Project (GAP)
The nonprofit Government Accountability Project’s mission is to protect the public interest by promoting government and corporate accountability through occupational free speech and ethical conduct, defending whistleblowers, and empowering citizen activists.


World Environment Center (WEC)
WEC creates sustainable business solutions through individual projects in emerging markets; convenes leadership roundtables to shape strategic thinking across a range of sustainability topics; and honors industry excellence through the annual awarding of its Gold Medal Award.


World Resources Institute
An environmental think tank that goes beyond research to find practical ways to protect the earth and improve lives. Its work is organized around four key programmatic goals: Climate Protection, Governance, Markets and Enterprise, and People and Ecosystems.


Zafèn Organization 
The Zafèn Organization was established with the objective of having a positive impact on Haiti’s economic, social and physical environment by providing micro, small and medium sized enterprises with enhanced access to capital. It is sponsored in part by DePaul University’s Institute for Business and Professional Ethics, which provides expertise in poverty alleviation and corporate social responsibility to Zafèn.
