Practices
Methods of Increasing Impact
There are numerous
practices that can result in research that has a greater impact on practice,
pedagogy, and theory. Below is a sample of practices that can be used to
encourage connections between business school research and management practice:
- Expand
on practice
Some
academics assume that new management ideas come from business research.
One could argue that the opposite is true and that innovations in management
come from practitioners. Researchers mostly refine, expand, and
distribute knowledge. Goal Setting theory (Latham & Locke, 1979) is one
example of how theory can expand on practice.
- Design
relevance into research
Scholars
can design relevance into their work by researching topical issues that are
important to practice and society. For example, Lie’s (2005) work in the
area of options back-dating resulted in SEC investigations and changes in
how options are recorded in relation to executive compensation.
- Create
community relevant research centers
Regional
research centers utilize faculty research skills and provide valuable data
to the community.
Examples
-
Involve practitioners in publications
Practitioners can enhance the relevance of publications by becoming involved
in writing and reviewing papers submitted to academic journals.
-
Collaborate with practitioners
In some
cases, practitioners might not be interested in writing or reviewing, but
would be interested in research design and interpretation. Their
collaboration in these processes would likely result in research that is
more relevant to practice.
Examples
- Write
practitioner books and articles
These
types of publications can be based on research conducted specifically for
practitioners or based on academic research results that are written in a
form that is useable by practitioners.
Examples
-
Demonstrate impact of research
Go beyond
counting refereed journal articles and other contributions (inputs) to
demonstrate the impact of scholarship (outcomes) on differing audiences
important to business schools. (Determining
Impact)
