Methods of Determining Impact
There are numerous practices that can result in research that has a greater impact on practice, pedagogy, and theory. Methods used to determine the impact of an intellectual contribution will vary according to the focus of the scholarship, the intended audience, and the form of output. Some examples of are provided below:

  • Publication in Discipline Journals, Journal Ratings, and Citation Rates
Many academics and business schools base judgments of the impact of an intellectual contribution on the journal in which it appears and/or the number of times the research has been cited by other academics. While common, exclusive use of this practice has also been criticized as excluding the potential impact of research that appears in other forms.

  • Awards by Industry or Professional Associations
Many industry and professional associations offer an array of awards for quality research. Often included are awards specifically designed to recognize research that has had a significant impact on business practice in a particular discipline.

The impact of intellectual contributions also may be determined by measuring or monitoring the following:

  • Adoption by Practitioners/Firms

  • Adoption and Integration into Schools' Curricula

  • Book Sales

  • Number of Regional/National Presentations

  • Reviews in the Popular Press
