Kathryn
Martell
Associate Dean, Montclair State University
Kathryn Martell received her BA
in Economics from the University of Chicago and her PhD in Business from the
University of Maryland. Her major
area of study was Strategic Management, and International Business was her
secondary area. She joined the
faculty at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) in 1991 as Associate
Professor of Management.
Prior to entering academe, Dr.
Martell spent 12 years in Washington D.C. as a consultant, government analyst,
and lobbyist. She had a political appointment in the Reagan Administration to
serve as Director of Congressional Affairs at the Department of Energy. She also
served as a senior trade analyst at the Department of Commerce. As a consultant,
she specialized in energy and trade issues, and political affairs. Her clients
included Exxon, Shell Oil, and Japan Electric Power Company. She also provided
consulting advice and analysis to the governments of Mexico, Japan, Italy, and Norway,
and provided energy analysis to the U.S. government during the Gulf War.
Dr. Martell teaches the
"capstone" strategy class at both the graduate and undergraduate
levels. She also teaches International Business courses. In 1997 and 1999 she
received two Title VI-B grants from the Department of Education totaling
$350,000 to further internationalize the business school curriculum at SIUE. Her
curricular work in international topics has been recognized with awards from
AACSB (MidWest Regional Award for Curriculum Innovation), AAUA (American
Association of University Administrators) and ACE (American Council of
Education). Samples of her teaching were also included in a national
videoconference on effective teaching produced by the AASCB.
In 2000, Dr. Martell was
promoted to Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the Business School at SIUE.
In this capacity, she was Director of the BSBA and MBA programs, and supervised
the Office of Student Services (Advisement). In Summer of 2002, she joined the
Business School at Montclair State University as Associate Dean.
Dr. Martell has published
in Human Resource Management, R&D Management, Industrial
Management, the Labor Law Journal, and Research in Higher
Education. She also provides consulting for local small businesses and
non-profit organizations on how to develop a workable strategic plan. Her main
non-academic interest remains politics.
