Number of Undergraduate and Master's Business Degrees Awarded is on the Upswing; Doctoral Degrees Continue to Decline

The number of students awarded undergraduate business degrees bounced back to mid '90s levels in 1997-98, reversing a decline evidenced the prior two years.

According to recent statistics released by the U.S. Department of Education, 233,119 bachelor's degrees in business were awarded n 1997-98, up 6,486 over the year before.  Of all bachelor's degrees awarded in all disciplines in 1997-98, 19.6 percent were in business.

The number of master's degrees in business and management awarded in 1997-98 continued to climb, topping the 100,000 mark.  In 1997-98, 102,171 master's degrees in business and management were awarded, representing 23.7 percent of all graduate degrees awarded that year.

At the doctoral level, 1,290 students received doctoral degrees in business in 1997-98, continuing a decline that began in the mid '90s.  Although the total number is down from 1,336 in 1996-97, the percent of women earning business doctorates continued to increase, to 31.3 percent in 1997-98.
