Number of Undergraduate Business Degrees Continue Downward Plunge, While MBA Degrees Awarded Skyrocket; Doctoral Degrees on the Decline

The number of students awarded undergraduate business degrees dropped again in 1996-97, continuing a decline first evidenced in the early 1990s. According to recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Education, 226,633 bachelor’s degrees in business were awarded in 1996-97, a shortfall of almost 30,000 degrees compared to the 256,603 undergraduate business degrees awarded in the record year 1991-92. Of all bachelor’s degrees awarded in 1996-97, only 19.3 percent were in business, the lowest percentage since the late 1970s. The data document the dramatic decline in recent years of undergraduate student interest in business as a major and as a career.

The number of MBA degrees awarded in 1996-97 reached a whopping 97,619. At the doctoral level, 1,336 students received doctoral degrees in business, down from a record high of 1,394 in 1994-95.

The percentage of women business graduates rose to new highs at the master’s level, remained the same at the undergraduate level and increased slightly at the doctoral level.
