Georgia State University Launches New Doctorate for
Executives
(Georgia, USA). The J. Mack Robinson College of Business at
Georgia State University will begin the state’s first doctorate program for
senior business executives beginning January 2009. The program will take
participants through three years of study in order to gain a broader
understanding of the global context of management and provide an opportunity to
shape the study and practice of business leadership. The program will enable
working professionals to pursue a higher level business education.
"Some schools do offer business PhD programs but they are
full-time programs oriented specifically toward training students for teaching
positions," said Huss. "Our program is uniquely designed for busy executives who
already have earned an advanced degree, are holding full-time jobs, and who seek
to enhance their effectiveness and careers in senior leadership positions," said
Huss. "Additionally, this program can provide companies, looking to hold on to
valued top executives, with a solution to their long-term retention needs.”
The program will be in an executive format with six two-day
residencies per term. Participants will be required to complete 54 credit hours
that include six hours of thesis work. The courses will focus on the issues of
global business and leadership and will include quantitative and qualitative
methods classes, as well as two applied research projects.
University of Miami Opens New Marketing Research Lab
(Miami, USA). The School of Business at the University of Miami
will open a new lab for technology-driven marketing research. The new facility,
the Canes Behavioral Laboratory, will become home to 31 networked computers with
leading behavioral research software.
“The School of Business is committed to research excellence and
to fulfill that commitment we must provide an environment where leading-edge
research and innovation can thrive,” said Barbara Kahn, dean of the University
of Miami School of Business Administration. “Not only does the laboratory create
tremendous research opportunities for current faculty and students, it will help
the school attract more top research faculty and complement our efforts to build
a world-class PhD program,” said Kahn.
Open University Begins New Academic Scholarship Program
(United Kingdom). The Open University Business School has
launched the International Fellowship Program in order to support
intercontinental knowledge sharing. The program will provide an opportunity for
academics to spend anywhere from three to six months at the Open University
Business School to work alongside distinctive research units. The program is
open to academics from all countries and hopes to attract those from developing
or transitioning nations.
James Fleck, dean of the OU Business School, stated that “by
sharing knowledge and good practice with individuals from international
institutions, our methodology of practice-based learning can be strengthened and
extended and we can help develop similar systems overseas. Today’s society truly
is global, and we see the need for education to move forward to reflect that,
extending beyond geographic boundaries and enabling more companies and
individuals to learn.”
