Lenovo
Transformation
From small beginnings, Lenovo has undergone an unparalleled transformationfrom relative obscurity to global player. Lenovo began its journey with
funding of $25,000 and only 11 researchers in 1984. Today, it has estimated
revenues of $13 billion and over 27,000 employees. During the 1990s, Lenovo
steadily built its personal computer brand to become the China market
leader, with market share of approximately 36 percent. But the company had
ambitions beyond its geographic borders. In December 2004, Lenovo made a bold
move to acquire the IBM PC business.
As the first Chinese company to realize its global aspirations, Lenovo now
faces numerous challenges: How to retain and grow its customer base with its
“Made in China” Thinkpad? How can Lenovo
succeed in driving its international business back to profitability? And
most importantly, how can Lenovo integrate the former IBM unit with the
Chinese operation and cultivate a cohesive corporate culture?
