      • Additional Information: Continuing education corresponds not only to post-secondary education but also to post-graduate short duration programs. Several programs dedicated to Executive Education are offered by continuing education certificates. These programs can take place in the School, in Company or online.
    •  Lato sensu” postgraduate degree
      • Typical admissions criteria: Students who hold a technology diploma, a licenciatura diploma, a bachelor’s degree or a five-year professional diploma are qualified for admission into graduate school (pós-graduação).
      • Typical duration: This degree represents a specialization in a certain area, and takes approximately 1 to 2 years to complete.
      • Offered by (institution types): Public, Community and Private Universities and Independent Schools.
      • Statistics:
      • Additional Information: A lato sensu degree is not considered an academic degree and is not considered a door opener for the later pursuit of a doctoral degree. If one is interested in a PhD, a strictu sensu master’s degree should be taken instead. MBA and many others master programs in Brazil are classified as lato sensu programs, and are equivalent to evening or weekend master’s programs in the U.S.
    • Stricto sensuMestrado (Master) degree
      • Typical admissions criteria: Students who hold a technology diploma, a licenciatura diploma, a bachelor’s degree or a five-year professional diploma are qualified for admission into graduate school (pós-graduação).
      • Typical duration: 1 to 2 years of full time studies to complete. Graduate master’s degrees are normally awarded following the completion of a 2-year program requiring satisfactory performance in a minimum number of advanced graduate courses (typically between 5-8 courses), plus the submission by the degree candidate of a master’s thesis (dissertação de mestrado) that is examined by an oral panel of at least three faculty members, including at least one external examiner.
      • Offered by (institution types): Programs certified by CAPES from Public, Community, Private Universities. Criteria depend on institution. Most of the programs ask for ANPAD exam[1] in the application.

      • Additional Information: This degree enables one to pursue an academic career. Often, a Master’s degree serves as an additional qualification for those in the job market, or for those who want to pursue a PhD. A stricto sensu master’s degree in management is the equivalent of a full-time MBA in North America.
