The measurement of learning has become increasingly important as employers and legislators require more ways to analyze learning attained by students. This seminar not only improves student learning, but reassures stakeholders that students are retaining what they are taught. In this overview of the assessment process, topics include reviewing AACSB expectations regarding assessment of student learning, as well as examples of what business schools are doing to meet this standard with emphasis on hands-on training.

Who Should Attend:

  • Faculty, department chairs, deans, those involved with faculty development, and those working on obtaining or maintaining accreditation at their school.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Provide an overview of the assessment process with an emphasis on direct measures of student performance.

  • Discover effective feedback techniques and receive assessment-related pedagogical resources that you can use immediately.

  • Design a functional, pilot assessment plan based on a specific vision you and your institution want to achieve for your students.

  • Apply the concepts and practices of assessment as they relate to obtaining and maintaining accreditation.

Facilitators (may vary for each offering):

Douglas J. Eder, associate provost, University of North Florida. Doug co-developed the AACSB Applied Assessment Seminar and, from 1993 to 2006, led the construction of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's (SIUE) program in academic assessment. His former university's (SIUE) assessment program was cited in 1998 by the AASCU as a "best practice" site for academic quality assurance.

Kathryn Martell, associate dean and professor of management at the business school at Montclair State University, teaches the "capstone" strategy class at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. She received her bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago and her PhD in business from the University of Maryland. Prior to entering academe, she spent 12 years in Washington, D.C., as a consultant, government analyst, and lobbyist. She was appointed by the Reagan Administration to serve as director of congressional affairs at the Department of Energy. She joined the Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville faculty in 1991 as associate professor of management. Her unique ability to make the subject of assurance of learning manageable and exciting to business school leaders makes her a highly sought-after conference speaker and consultant on quality assurance. She is the author of the AACSB International Assessment Resource Center.
