Frequently Asked Questions About the Accreditation Standards

18. Is the "general education component" (Standard C.1.2.a) the same as non-business courses? Are "business communications" and "math for business" part of the general education component?

In practice, teams count all non-business coursework as part of the general education component of the undergraduate curriculum. There is an expectation that a significant part of non-business coursework will be a structured general education program consonant with institutional expectations.

Courses are deemed to be a part of the non-business coursework based on their content, not on their title or their location in the administrative structure of the institution. A course specifically structured to provide communication skills for business (or math skills for business) would be considered a business course (even if it is delivered outside of the business school). On the other hand, a course titled "Math for Business Students" would be a general education course if it is a regular math course with content not geared to business applications.
