Frequently Asked Questions About the Accreditation Standards

17. Does the undergraduate curriculum have to include the calculus?

The standards require the undergraduate curriculum to include "mathematics and statistics" (Standard C.1.2.b.). Specific treatment of topics within those fields should be determined by individual schools to create curricula consistent with the school's mission. Advanced courses in some curricula will require the calculus as a prerequisite; in other curricula this will not be the case. In some schools the degree objectives may imply a level of quantitative reasoning ability for graduates that will require the calculus as part of the general education component regardless of its necessity as a prerequisite for advanced applied courses. These deliberations and decisions should be made by the faculty with regard to the objectives of specific degree programs and the school mission.
