Frequently Asked Questions About the Accreditation Standards

16. AACSB International standards refer to demographic diversity of personnel. What must we do to satisfy these standards?

Demographic diversity of personnel is mentioned three places in the standards. The Preconditions state (P.1.d) "The institution should demonstrate continuous efforts to achieve demographic diversity among students, faculty and staff." The Faculty Composition and Development standard states (FD.2.c.) "The school should demonstrate continuous efforts to achieve demographic diversity in its faculty." The Students standard states (S.1.b.) "The school should demonstrate continuous efforts to achieve demographic diversity in its student enrollment."

These are examples of standards that must be interpreted with consideration for the circumstances of the particular institution and school under review. Both mission and context will effect the interpretation. For example, the phrase "efforts to achieve demographic diversity" takes on different meanings in historically black colleges and universities, an institution with an all female student body, a school serving part-time students from a geographically restricted region, an "international" school, a flagship public university and a college with strong ties to a religious tradition. In each case, mission and context will influence professional judgment about the behaviors to be expected from the institution and the school.

The accreditation advisor, the peer review team and the school will need to interact to assure that the school is being evaluated in an appropriate context. Systematic and continued activities must be shown, and processes and achievements should be noted.
