According to the US Department of Education National Center
for Education Statistics, doctoral degrees made up only .3% of the
business and management degrees conferred in the United States in 2002-03
and only 1% of graduate degrees conferred in business.

Based on AACSB International survey data, median doctoral
degree enrollment is 53 in US schools, 43 in Canadian schools and 49 in
schools outside of the US and Canada.

Between 1998 and 2003, research doctorates earned declined
11.7% from 1,172 to 1,035 overall. The largest declines were in Operations
Research and General Business Management. Even with these declines, there
was growth in one area; International Business doctorate degrees increased
33.3% from 33 to 44.

It takes time to earn a doctoral degree. In 2003, it was
reported by the National Opinion Research Center that the median
registered time from baccalaureate degree to the completion of the
doctorate degree is 7.9 years.
